Reading the fee breakdown
Etsy and eBay have deceptively stacked fees. Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee applies first, then 3% + $0.25 payment processing, then $0.20 listing fee — the effective combined take on a $35 item is around 13%. eBay's 13.25% + $0.30 is more straightforward but still significantly higher than Shopify or Stripe-direct.
Amazon's referral fee varies widely by category — electronics at 8% are far more competitive than clothing at 17%. If you sell across categories, use this calculator with each category rate to understand where Amazon is worth the fee and where it isn't.
The "own site" column (Stripe direct) is the fee floor — you can't pay less in payment processing for a card transaction. Every other channel charges more on top of this, in exchange for discovery, trust, or infrastructure.

Frequently asked questions
Why does eBay's fee look different from the percentage I see on eBay's website?
eBay's 13.25% final value fee applies to the total transaction amount including shipping. The calculator uses 13.25% + $0.30 (the standard managed payments structure). eBay also charges $0.35 per insertion (listing fee) above your free monthly allowance (250 for most sellers). For simplicity, the insertion fee is omitted here — add it to your COGS if you list hundreds of SKUs.
What does "Own site (Stripe)" actually include?
Stripe's standard rate: 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. No platform fee, no monthly subscription, no listing fee. You still need a storefront (Squarespace, WooCommerce, custom) — those costs are not included. If you're on Shopify but want to compare the payment-only cost, use this column and add your Shopify monthly fee separately.
How does Etsy's listing fee work?
Etsy charges $0.20 per listing, and listings renew every 4 months (or on each sale). In practice, each unit sold triggers a $0.20 renewal fee. The calculator includes this as a per-sale cost. Etsy also charges a 6.5% transaction fee and 3% + $0.25 payment processing, making Etsy's effective per-sale cost higher than it appears from the headline percentage.
Does Amazon include payment processing in its referral fee?
Yes — Amazon's referral fee replaces payment processing. You don't pay Stripe or PayPal separately on Amazon. The 15% (or category-specific rate) covers payment handling, fraud protection, A-to-Z guarantee, and currency conversion. Select your product's category from the dropdown to use the right rate.
Can I compare all five channels on the same product?
Yes — that's the purpose of this tool. The table shows every channel side by side so you can see which platform nets you the most per sale and per month. Note that fees don't reflect discovery and acquisition costs — a channel with higher fees may still be net-positive if it drives additional organic sales.
